LAHORE, April 20: Fancied bay filly Lovely Dunit scorched her way to become the top sprinter among four-year-olds when she burst into action to land the over 1,200 metres feature event during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Ridden by jockey Shahid Rehman, the progeny of Baker’s Gate out-of-Lady Dunit, romped home to an easy victory by beating the front runner Miss Liza by one and three quarters of a length. Chestnut colt Vendetta was nosed out to third position with Noor completing the frame among the six runners.

Lady Dunit clocked one minute, 14 1/5 seconds over the sprinting distance in the class IV, division I, II and III combined handicap race, which also happened to be the fifth race on the card.

A race earlier, three-year-old filly Bright Flame prevailed in a thrilling finish to win the supporting event, run over 1,000 metres. Parternered by jockey Shahid Rehman, Bright Flame got home in a flash, zooming past the front-running filly Janu by half-a-length. It was a fairytale finish for trainer Haji Fazal Hadi.

The winner clocked one minute, 2 3/5 seconds. Don’t Follow and Dubai Fan completed the frame among eight runners. Janu, owned by Munir Dar, was ridden by the riding boy Anjum and Bright Flame by the leading jockey Shahid Rehman, which really made a difference.

Jockey Shahid Rehman had better luck on Sunday when he rode home three winners -- Chimera, Bright Flame and Lovely Dunit -- in the first, fourth and fifth race, respectively. Jockey Abdur Rahim exhibited fine riding skills when he won the second race piloting bay horse Zoaq to beat Will He Wish by a short head.

Zoaq clocked one minute, 2 3/4 seconds in the over 1,000 metres race.

The sixth and last race was won by a long shot filly Arzoo with apprentice riding boy Bilal Ahmad in the saddle. She beat Big Choice by a length. The favourite filly Noor-un-Nisa, who was not allowed to run on merit by jockey M. Hanif, put up a dismal show by finishing third.

But Noor-un-Nisa, owned by steward Syed Parvaiz Hussain Shah, was handled rather roughly by jockey M. Hanif as pointed out later by Jockey Club Of Pakistan (JCP) steward Munir Dar. Many race-goers too expressed their concern over the pulling of the filly.
