MARDAN, May 3: District Nazim Himayatullah Mayar has hinted at the formation of a forum of all district nazims from the province, saying that a convention of the local government representatives would be held in Peshawar soon, to devise a strategy for the protection of the system.

Speaking at a session of the district council here on Saturday, he said that conspiracies against the local government system would be foiled, as it had full constitutional cover. The local government system was protected under articles 29 and 32 of the Constitution, which could not be done away with easily, the district nazim added.

He out rightly rejected the corruption allegations in the new system, saying that a proper check and balance system at different levels already existed and there was no question of corruption as a nazim could not spend a single penny without the approval of the council.

Mayar said that before the introduction of the local government system, the people had to go to Peshawar to get their problems solved.

The council through a resolution condemned the resolution presented by politician Barjees Tahir against the local government system. A number of nazims and councilors spoke on the issue and demanded that the resolution presented in the lower house of the parliament should be withdrawn.
