HYDERABAD, May 8: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of a flyover at Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Chowk.

He said the flyover project would be completed by October at a cost of Rs350 million and added that work on 1,300 development projects was proceeding rapidly which included eight other flyovers, one underpass and five bridges.

Kanwar Jamil said Hyderabad, in the past known as Nerunkot, was an ancient city of Pakistan and had a long chequered history. He said about 45 years back, it used to be the third largest city of the country but lost the glory due to neglect.

He said the present district government was confronted with a host of problems including broken roads, inadequate and outdated water supply and sewerage system, deteriorated system of education and absence of health and recreational facilities.

He said this necessitated the launching of hundreds of development schemes in different sectors, simultaneously. He said at present work was proceeding at a hectic pace on six new sewerage pumping stations, sewerage treatment plants, filter plants and six flyovers.He said a flyover was almost complete while work on remaining five was proceeding at a hectic pace. He said tenders had been invited for the remaining two flyovers and one underpass on which work will begin next month. He said even political opponents had admitted of massive development works being carried out in Karachi and Hyderabad.

District Nazim said next government will need to concentrate only on projects required after 10 years. He said from the traffic point of view, 10 spots were identified as most sensitive, including Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Chowk. A flyover was being constructed keeping in view future traffic requirements of the city, he said adding the project will hopefully complete within next five months. He said Makki Shah Road linking Hyderabad and Latifabad was also under construction at a cost of Rs70 million along with the 205 meter long flyover.

He said Hyderabad will emerge as an ultra modern city after a year as all projects will complete by that time. Those who spoke included Nazim City Taluka, Javed Jabbar, Nazim of the host UC, Mohammad Rashid Khan and others.

The newly appointed DCO Hyderabad Farooq Ahmed Leghari, Javed Jabbar, Project Director Hyderabad Development Project Syed Sarfaraz Ali Shah, the nazims, naib nazims and councillors of different union councils, elite of the area and a large number of district officials were also present on the occasion.
