KARACHI, May 13: A nine-point agenda including approval of Pakistan’s participation in the Aug 8-24 Beijing Olympic Games, will come up for discussion when the executive committee of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) meets in Lahore on May 24.
To be chaired by POA president, Lt Gen (retired) Syed Arif Hasan, this will be the first meeting of the executive committee after the quadrennial four-year elections of the POA that were held in February of this year. The meeting planned for May 17, originally, was moved ahead by a week due to ‘unavoidable circumstances’.
Besides giving a nod to the Pakistan contingent’s participation in the Beijing Games this summer, the meeting among other matters, will also confirm the minutes of the last executive committee meeting, present a report on the Olympic Torch Relay held at Islamabad on April 16, approve Pakistan’s participation in this year’s third Commonwealth Youth Games (at Pune, India, from Oct 12 to 18) and the inaugural Asian Beach Games (at Bali, Indonesia, from Oct 18 to 26).
Action plans chalked out by the national sports federations for their effective preparation and participation in the 11th South Asian Games at Dhaka (Nov-Dec 2009) and the 16th Asian Games (Guanzhou, China, in 2010) would also be discussed.
The meeting will review the progress of adoption and implementation of the POA-approved standard (model) constitution of national federations by the federations and the provincial Olympic associations too.
The filling of vacancies in the executive committee will also be approved in the meeting.
