SWABI, May 17: The Zaida police station came under a rocket attack from an undisclosed location in the small hours of Saturday, police said.
The rocket was fired exactly after three days of holding a jirga and meeting of local elders with the district police officials, who vowed to work collectively for maintaining peace in the area.
The rocket landed inside the police station at 1:30 am and damaged the wall of a room, where SHO Munawar Khan was sleeping. No casualty was reported.
In reply to a question, an official said that it was the first rocket attack in the district, adding that earlier CD shops were blown up and bombs were planted in different buildings, including the Chota Lahor police station.
The incident resulted in the suspension of power supply to the police station and its surroundings for seven hours.
Mohammad Rafiq, district police officer along with other officials rushed to the Zaida police station to inspect the site. He said that the police would not be browbeaten by such acts of terrorism.
Former NWFP education minister Maulana Fazal Ali also visited the police station and criticised the act. “We strongly oppose the extremist elements and would continue to do so in future,” he said.
