MULTAN, May 27: The City District Assembly rejected on Tuesday a Pakistan Muslim League-N-backed resolution for changing the name of Pervaiz Elahi Institute of Cardiology to the Multan Institute of Cardiology. The house also condemned Federal Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf for his announcement to shelve the Kalabagh Dam project.

In the resolution, Union Council No 5 Nazim Faiz Rasool Rijwana said the cardiology institute’s original name was Multan Institute of Cardiology but “sycophants” had named it as Pervaiz Elahi Institute of Cardiology. He suggested the name of institute should be Multan Institute of Cardiology.

Convener Syed Wajid Ali Shah conducted vote two times on the insistence of the nazim but every time the house rejected the resolution by a show of hand. Nazims chanted slogans in favor of former chief minister Pervaiz Elahi.

The house also passed a resolution presented by UC No 17 Nazim Abdul Ghafar Ansari to condemn Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf for shelving the Kalabagh Dam project. The house supported the construction of the dam.

Tension mounted in the house when Faiz Rijwana and Dr Hafiz Mushtaq Awan distributed a pamphlet which demanded Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani take back Rs100 billions Pak-Arab Fertilisers Company from City District Nazim Mian Faisal Mukhtar. The pro-district nazim members tore the pamphlets and shouted slogans in favor of the district nazim.
