KARACHI, May 28: A suspect arrested by the police for his alleged involvement in street crimes was set free reportedly by local leadership and activists of the Pakistan People’s Party, who stormed Taimuria police station late Tuesday night, police said.

Suhalin Zaman was arrested along with the recovery of a gun from his possession. An FIR 317/2008 was registered against him at Taimuria police station.

Police said a local leader of PPP’s defunct district central along with dozens of party activists gathered at the police station and demanded release of the suspect. On refusal by police, they got enraged and attacked the duty officer and other policemen. They reportedly ransacked the police station, tore apart the FIR, and snatched the keys of the lock-up and got the suspect released.

After receiving orders from the police high-ups on Wednesday morning, police registered another FIR (318/2008) against Sohail Ansari and over 30 other activists of the PPP under Sections 147, 148, 149, 186, 225, 353/34 of the PPC. Police claimed that they had rearrested Suhalin Zaman and picked up some party workers.
