PML decides to defend Musharraf

Published June 1, 2008

LAHORE, May 31: The PML-Q has decided to launch a campaign to blunt what it calls the coalition partners’ attacks on President Pervez Musharraf and tell the people that both the PPP and the PML-N are raising various issues to deflect attention from their inability to impeach the president and reinstate the deposed judges.

The party will show its strength in the Senate, which is starting its session on June 4, to demonstrate that the ruling coalition does not have sufficient support in the upper house and, therefore, will not be able to get any constitutional amendment adopted.

Under the Constitution, a constitutional amendment can be passed only by a two-thirds majority in both houses of parliament.

A PML-Q office-bearer said on Saturday that the party would hold a series of press conferences in Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar in a few days to defend the performance and policies of President Musharraf and highlight the failures of the parties in power.

The PML-Q thinks a movement for the reinstatement of deposed judges cannot bring down the prices or rid the country of shortages of power, flour and other items.
