LAHORE, June 2: A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by unidentified youth in a Gawalmandi area mosque on Monday.

Police said the victim (I), daughter of Tariq Mehmood of Railway Road, went to a shop near her house to buy grocery when a bearded man lured her to the first floor of Kalmay Wali Mosque, where prayer-leader Ghulam Rasool resided.

The accused subjected the girl to sexual assault and escaped leaving her injured.

The girl somehow managed to reach home where she fell unconscious. She was taken to the Mayo Hospital by her family.

On being informed of the incident, SSP (operations) Chaudhry Shafiq Ahmed and other police officers rushed to the hospital.

The SSP told Dawn that the prayer leader and prayer caller Ejaz (24) of Azad Kashmir had been taken into custody for interrogation.

The girl, who was stable, told police that she could recognise the culprit.
