KINGSTON (Jamaica), June 7: Former world 100-metre record-holder Asafa Powell will make his return from a chest muscle injury in two weeks at a meet in Trinidad and Tobago as a tune-up for Jamaica’s Olympic trials.

Powell plans to run at a meet June 20-22 ahead of the Jamaican national championships here on June 25-27, his agent, Paul Doyle, said on Friday.

“We’re always said we wanted to have at least one race before the Jamaican trials, but we hadn’t confirmed anything,” Doyle said.

Powell suffered a pectoral muscle injury in April and has pulled out of meets in order to heal before coming back at the Jamaican selection meet for August’s Beijing Olympics.

Last September in Italy, Powell shaved the 100m world record by .03 of a second to 9.74 seconds, but last Saturday in New York, compatriot Usain Bolt lowered Powell’s mark with a spectacular victory in 9.72 seconds.—AFP
