HYDERABAD, June 25: Tando Allahyar District Nazim Dr Rahila Gul Magsi could not hold a budget committee meeting on Wednesday ahead of the presentation of the district government’s budget before the district council.

She has sent a complaint in writing to the Sindh chief secretary that EDOs, who are the members of the committee, have been prevented from attending the meeting by her opponents.

Since the massive victory of the PPP in last elections, Dr Rahila has found herself in a trouble as her brother Dr Irfan Gul Magsi and sister Adeeba Gul Magsi lost their provincial and national assembly seats in general elections.

“I got a telephone call at 2.30am from the DPO of Tando Allahyar, requiring me to assess the situation before arriving at my secretariat for holding the meeting of the committee. He told me that he had received information that some people might gather there to harm me,” Dr Rahila told Dawn over phone.

“What is happening in Tando Allahyar is unprecedented and it is just to oust me from the district but I too have made pledged to fight back,” she claimed.

Holding of the committee meeting is a provision envisaged in the Sindh Local Government Ordinance 2001 and the district nazim who heads the committee, has to present the budget.

EDO finance is the secretary of the committee while DCO and all other EDOs are its members.

“The meeting of the committee is mandatory before presentation of the budget but the DCO of Tando Allahyar and the local PPP district office-bearers are harassing EDOs to not to attend the meeting,” she claimed in her complaint.

She said that it was aimed at to get her suspended by the chief executive of the province on the grounds that she was not even able to present a budget and that she had no support of majority members.

“I have so far presented three budgets which had been unanimously approved by the district council as I command majority in the house to date,” she said.

That’s the reason, she said, her opponents had not been able so far to bring a no trust motion against her despite harassing and pressurising her supporters in the council.

On the other hand, rumours spread in Tando Allahyar that district nazim had been arrested by police.

The district nazim has convened a meeting of the budget committee for Thursday to discuss proposals of budgetary estimates with its members.

She claimed that UC Nazim Sanjar Chang Lakhi Rind, who was on pre-arrest bail in a water theft case and other cases, was booked in ninth case on Wednesday by the police. She said it was a victimisation move by PPP office-bearers.

In her complaint to the Sindh chief secretary she has sought his intervention.
