Wapda bow out of AFC qualifiers

KARACHI, June 27: Bangladesh’s Abahani FC sent Wapda packing 1-0 as Nepal Police FC after drawing 2-2 with Tajikistan’s Regar-TadAZ reached the semi-finals of the 4th AFC President’s Cup qualifiers at the MBPJ Stadium in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, on Thursday.

According to information released by the FIFA Football House in Lahore on Friday, midfielder Chetan Ghimire opened the account for Nepal Police in the 33rd minute of their match with Regar whose striker Ibragim Rabimov restored parity just two minutes into the second half.

Jumanu Rai put Nepal ahead again in the 67th minute but only to see Rabimov equalise for the Tajiks during injury time.

Earlier, in the Wapda-Abahani encounter, Bangladesh’s Jahid Hasan Ameli scored in the match’s 84th minute to put Wapda at the bottom of Group ‘A’.

Regar-TadAZ finished with seven points in Group ‘A’ while Nepal Police became the best runners-up of the three groups.

The other two semi-finalists, Kyrgyzstan’s Dordoi-Dynamo and Turkmenistan’s Ashgabat, have already qualified for the main tournament to be played in Bishkek from Sept 19 to 21.
