ISLAMABAD, July 7: Pakistan People’s Party co-chairman Asif Zardari is expected to leave Dubai for London in a couple of days to meet PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif for what political analysts believe may be the make-or-break talks on the issue of reinstatement of the deposed judges.

Sources told Dawn on Monday Mr Zardari decided to meet Mr Sharif in London after getting reports that the PML-N was seriously considering to withdraw its support for the PPP government at the centre due to its failure to reinstate the judges.

Many PML-N leaders have said that their party would wait for reinstatement of the deposed judges till the end of the current month and after that it would be difficult for them to sit on the treasury benches.

Moreover, the PML-N leaders are alleging that the PPP has not taken their party into confidence on major national issues, including the operation in tribal areas and increase in the prices of petroleum products, electricity and gas.

Before leaving for London last week, Mr Sharif demanded that the PPP leadership should take the coalition partners into confidence over the actions recently taken by the government, particularly its decision to launch an operation in the tribal areas.

Mr Sharif said he was present in a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s House some two months ago in which it was decided that the situation in tribal areas would be dealt with only through negotiations.

He expressed surprise over the decision to launch the operation and asked the PPP leadership to explain to him what had forced it to change the decision.

The sources said the PML-N leadership had categorically told the PPP that it would not accept the restoration of the deposed judges through a constitutional package.

Adviser to the government on parliamentary affairs Izhar Amrohvi confirmed to Dawn that so far the PPP had received no feedback from any of its coalition partners on the proposed draft of the 18th Constitution Amendment Bill.

PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that Mr Zardari was planning to leave for London, but no date had been fixed.

Mr Babar did not rule out the possibility of a meeting between Mr Sharif and Mr Zardari in London.

“Yes, they can meet in London,” Mr Babar said.

However, Mr Babar said that Mr Zardari’s plan to go to the UK had been finalised before Mr Sharif arrived in London.

Mr Sharif is in London to be with his wife Kulsoom Nawaz who recently underwent a knee surgery.
