KARACHI, July 11: The main round of Subh-e-Nau National Tennis Cup commenced at the Modern Club courts on Friday with seeded players advancing to the next round.

Aqeel, who the other day retained men’s singles title in the national hard court tennis championship moved ahead by virtue of a walkover against qualifier Abdul Majid of Hyderabad.

Second seed Asim Shafik, third seed Jalil Khan and fourth seed Nomi Qamar notched up straight victories over their respective opponents.

Asim overcame Faizan Khurram 7-5, 6-1 while while Jalil inflicted 6-0, 6-2 defeat on Hyderabad’s Rafi Darbari. Nomi who went down to Aqeel in the final of national hard court tennis championship, got the better of Aamir Ali Khan 6-2, 6-2.

Earlier eight players — Abdul Saeed, Danish Ahmed, Zia Hai, Abdul Majid (Hyderabad), Israr Gul (Peshawar), M. Naseem, Zaid Noor and Iftikhar Ahmed (Peshawar) qualified for the main round.

The ladies singles event begins from Saturday.

The event which is second under the aegis of NGO after national hard court tennis championship concludes on July 15.
