KARACHI, July 17: Six people, including a local office-bearer of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, were killed overnight in acts of violence across the city, police and hospital sources said on Thursday.Sachal police said the 35-year-old PPP activist, Shahid Hussain Rind, was killed and another worker critically injured in front of nearby Shumail Complex in Gulistan-i-Jauhar in the small hours of Thursday.

The SP of Gulshan Town, Sohail Zafar Chattha, said a murder case (FIR No 429/08) was registered against workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, a major coalition partner in the provincial setup, on the complaint of Mohammed Waqar Baloch, the deputy general secretary of the PPP in provincial constituency No PS-126.

He said that the victim had also been named in FIRs, adding that the nature of offences was not immediately known.

Mohammed Waqar Baloch told Dawn that deceased Rind was a car dealer and he was living with his parents in a flat in Jauhar Town.

He alleged that the Muttahida workers made his brother-in-law, Kashif, hostage at Shumail Complex and they sent one of his friends, Anver, for him and his other friends.

“We reached there to find my sister’s husband blindfolded with the captors, one of them pointing a pistol to his head,” he alleged and added that the Muttahida men released the captive warning him and his associates of dire consequences.

He named Salman, Khurrum, Imran alias Kalo, Shani and Arshi in the FIR and alleged that the Muttahida workers opened fire on them from behind as they left the Shumail Complex.

However, a spokesman for the MQM told Dawn that it was being ascertained at the moment whether the suspects named in the FIR belonged to the party.

Mr Baloch man said Shahid Hussain was killed instantly and another activist, Sadiq Ali Awan, received critical bullet wounds.

The body and the injured were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where sources said the injured man, who sustained a bullet in his neck, was still in an unstable condition.
