LAHORE, July 24: Nine superintendents of police (SPs) have been working in Lahore for years surviving a mass reshuffle by the Pakistan Muslim League-N regime after the Feb 18 elections, Dawn has learnt.

Among them, five SPs -- Ahsan Younas, Dr Inam Waheed, Baber Bakht Qureshi, Capt Sohail Chaudhry (retd) and Dr Raja Abid – are from the 28th common of Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) and have been occupying key posts since 2003.

SP Husain Habib Imtiaz, who is currently chief traffic officer of the City Traffic Police, has been serving in the city since 2001. He was security SP when police brutally tortured protesting lawyers against the sacking of chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on March 9.

Besides the five SPs, two divisional ranker SPs -- Rana Ahmed Hasan and Muhammad Umer Virk -- have spent all of their service tenure in Lahore.

Mr Imtiaz served as ASP in Lahore and after promotion in Feb 2004, he was posted as Cantonment SP (investigation). He has served in Model Town and Civil Lines areas and as the security SP. At present, he is working as chief traffic officer.

Civil Lines division SP Younas has failed to control vehicle thefts in Civil Lines, Racecourse, Lytton Road and Qilla Gujjar Singh.

He earlier served as Naulakha ASP in 2003 and then left for the UK in 2004 for studies.

After his return, he served as Defence ASP. He was promoted as SP in April 2006 and has served as investigation Cantonment SP and Mughalpura SP.

When former PML-Q minister Dr Sher Afgan Niazi was beaten by a mob in the Mozang area, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior Rehman Malik had ordered his suspension. The authorities, however, removed then SSP (operations) Dr Tariq Khokhar.

Dr Inam Waheed has worked as Defence investigation ASP, Saddar investigation SP, Criminal Record Office SP, Iqbal Town SP, personal staff officer to former inspector general Ahmed Nasim and now he is Cantonment division SP.

Mr Inam, who was suspended on the orders of (now deposed) justice Chaudhry in Oct 2006 in connection with a kidnap case, remained an officer of special duty (OSD) for four months. Later, he made his comeback and was posted as SP (Investigation). Now, frequent blind murders, believed to be done by serial head hitters, since his posting as SP (investigation) in Factory Area and Defence speak volumes for his performance.

Dr Raja Abid has worked as Model Town ASP and Sialkot SP (for two weeks) and Ravi Town SP in his five-year long tenure. Now, he is working as Model Town SP.

Capt Sohail Chaudhry (retd) served as Baghbanpura ASP in 2003 and in 2005 he was transferred to the NWFP. Later, he got promotion in 2006 and was posted as Mujahid SP and currently he is working as Iqbal Town SP.

Baber Bakht Qureshi, who also belongs to the 28th common, has spent most of his service period in the city as ASP and SP (investigation). CRO SP Jehanzeb Nazir Khan belongs to the 29th common. His ‘distinction’ is that he managed his transfer from Quetta to Lahore as trainee ASP in 2003, and since then he has not been posted outside the city.

Rana Ahmed Hassan - a ranker police officer, has been serving as City SP since 2006 despite his failure to control manufacture and sale of kites and its related material in the Walled City.
