KARACHI, July 25: Deposed chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry is due to arrive here on July 29 to unveil a commemorative plaque naming the Sindh High Court bar room after him, SHC Bar Association President Rasheed A. Razvi said on Friday.

He said the deposed CJ would arrive here from Islamabad at 11.30pm and would be greeted at the airport by lawyers led by their representatives. He would visit the SHC bar room the next (Wednesday) morning to perform the ceremony in the presence of the city’s lawyers and deposed SHC chief justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and other judges. He would fly back to Islamabad at 4pm on July 30. Mr Razvi did not disclose where the deposed CJ would stay overnight but said the SC guest house at Bath Island, Clifton, would not be available. He said the administration had been informed of the visit and requested to provide the necessary security and protocol.

The SHCBA earlier faxed a resolution adopted by its managing committee on Friday morning. The resolution said: “The committee ‘hereby resolves that to honour the struggle of the legal fraternity for rule of law and independence of judiciary, the contribution made by the civil society, the people of Pakistan and the judges who stood by their oath of office and refused to recognize the unconstitutional measures of Nov 3, 2007, the Bar Room of the Sindh High Court be named “Iftikhar Hall”. For that purpose it is proposed the Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, be invited to grace the occasion by unveiling a commemorative plaque on the main door of the bar room on Wednesday the 30th of July, 2008, or any other day convenient to him...”
