NAWABSHAH, July 27: Hundreds of members of Irrigation Workers Union continued their protest outside the press club on Sunday to press for acceptance of their demands.

The protesters including baildars, tandails, khalasis, watchmen, drivers, daroghas, operators and abdars of Nusrat, Dad, Naseer, Rohri and Hala irrigation divisions registered their protest at a camp set up outside the press club a day ago against denial of quota in jobs for children of ‘martyr,’ deceased and retired workers.

Union leaders Mohammed Essa Sangrasi, Ashiq Hussain Khoso and Ahmed Khan Chandio told journalists that they had boycotted work and not taken measurement of any canal in the 10 divisions since Saturday.

They said that their sons who had applied for jobs recently advertised by the department were told that the lists had been finalised by senior officials and there was no quota for employees.

They said that Irrigation Secretary Shuja Ahmed Junejo recently sacked 15 employees who had been appointed on disabled quota during Arbab government on the pretext of ban on recruitment and did not reinstate them despite decision in their favour by Sindh High Court.

They said that the 15 employees were still working in the department but their salaries had been stopped.

Their demands also included establishment of residential colonies, provision of work material, health and other facilities, they said.

They warned that they would not budge from the camp until their demands were accepted and demanded that the PPP co-chairman and his sister MNA Faryal Talpur take notice of injustices with lower grade employees and direct the department to accept their charter of demands.

All the canals and minors of Nusrat and Dad irrigation divisions of Nawabshah remain unattended since Saturday.

Executive engineers of Nusrat and Dad divisions were not available for comments.
