MIRPURKHAS, July 29: Two people were killed in Umerkot in rain-related incidents. Downpour also exposed the fragile distribution system of Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (Hesco). Many areas in different districts remained without power for hours since Monday night to Tuesday.
Our Mirpurkhas correspondent reports that two people were killed and others injured in Umerkot in rain-related incidents.
Three people Mir Mohammad, Din Mohammad and Kirshan Kolhi were injured when the wall of a house collapsed. Kolhi succumbed to his injuries while the two were admitted to the hospital.
In another incident, Jalal Meghwar was killed when hit by lightening in Rohi Waro village in Umerkot while an unidentified woman sustained injuries.
Rain also lashed Mirpurkhas and Tharparkar districts.
Rainwater accumulated on main roads and streets. Low-lying areas were inundated in Mirpurkhas. Water supply remained disturbed as soon after the rainfall power was suspended.
HYDERABAD: The city received heavy rainfall for one and half hour last night which hit Hesco’s power supply network. The meteorological department recorded six millimetres of rains till 8am on Tuesday.
Fire broke out in power supply system in a plaza in cantonment area forcing the residents to move on to the rooftop. Hesco officials didn’t arrive there despite repeated complaints. They came only when Makki Shah police brought the staff from Gari Khata sub division office in police mobile. Panic spread in the area when massive sparking with loud explosions in transformer continued for over one hour. Subsequently power was suspended by Hesco after repeated calls by residents, police and shopkeepers.
Met office had a forecast cloudy and partly cloudy weather with thunder and dust storm in Mirpurkhas and Hyderabad divisions in next 24 hours. Chances of moderate to heavy rainfall were also predicted. Sukkur and Larkana divisions had same forecast along with dust storm.
SANGHAR: Widespread rain lashed Khipro, Shahpur Chakar, Khadro, Jhol, Tando Adam, Sinjhoro, Shahdadpur and other areas. Sewerage system failed in almost all towns causing accumulation of sewage in streets.
The farming community was happy as rainwater will overcome shortage of irrigation water to some extent and benefit cotton and sugarcane crops. It washed leaves and removed dust gathered on cotton due. It also washed away mites from cotton and sugarcane. Chemical sprays will be beneficial if applied to control pest.
Farmers will divert saved irrigation water for soaking pulses, oilseeds and sunflower for further cultivation. However, more rain will damage crops.
NAWABSHAH: Rain accompanied by windstorm again hit Nawabshah as met office said the system from India (North-East) hit the district which was followed by windstorm. The city received 20mm of rain which continued till filing of this report. Qazi Ahmed, Doulatpur, Daur, Sakrand and other parts also received rainfall.
Electricity supply to the city and adjoining villages was suspended which affected pumping machines. Rainwater accumulated on all main roads and streets. Trees fell and motorcyclists slipped in some cases.
Taluka Nazim Abdul Rauf Khan and Naib Nazim Khan Bahadur Bhatti told journalists that municipal administration was facing difficulties in draining out rainwater due to power failure.
No major loss was reported from any part till filing of the report.
THATTA: Low-lying areas of Thatta and a number of towns were submerged under knee-deep water after monsoon rain lashed the district. Thatta, Mirpur Bathoro, Gharo, Sujawal, Jati, Chuhar Jamali and other areas received moderate rain, disrupting traffic and causing breakdowns in many areas.
DADU: Different parts of Dadu and Jamshoro district received rain on Tuesday. Various parts received low rains and heavy dust storm which disturbed power and communication system for hours.
