ISLAMABAD, Aug 30: Sana Mehmood became the fourth skipper, after Kiran Illyas (2005), Razia Sultana (2006) and Nabila Raza (2007), to lift the National Women’s Football Championship trophy when giant-killers Rawalpindi’s Young Rising Stars FC beat Wapda 5-4 on penalty shootouts after a goalless draw in the final played here at the Jinnah Stadium on Saturday.

The exciting final between star-studded Wapda and spirited Rawalpindi club saw both the teams on the offensive right from the very start but despite all midfielders’ fine work, the strikers failed to score till full time. The extra-time also remained barren resulting in a tie-breaker.

The top three teams, along with glittering trophies, received handsome prize money announced already by Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat last June.

Sana, Young Rising Stars’ skipper received a cheque of Rs50,000 for her club while runner-up Wapda got Rs30,000. Meanwhile, the third-placed team Punjab University pocketed Rs20,000. The Most Valuable Player prize of Rs5,000 went to Young Rising Stars’ Nadia Bhatti while leading marksman Hira Khan of Diya Women’s Football Club (nine goals) and best keeper Saba Awan (Punjab University) pocketed the same amount. In order to promote good sportsmanship, PFF also decided presented Rs10,000 to winner of the Fair Play trophy. The award was proudly received by the girls representing Islamabad.—Agencies
