HYDERABAD, Sept 9: Workers of Hyderabad Electricity Supply Company held rallies and demonstrations across the province to observe “Demands Day” on Tuesday on a call given by the Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union.

They were demanding end to political interference in postings and transfers, upgradation in scales, raise in salary in accordance with inflation rate and quota for their children in employment.

In Hyderabad, hundreds of workers participated in a rally, which terminated at the press club after marching on main roads. President of the union Abdul Latif Nizamani urged the government to take effective measurers to end lawlessness, terrorism, unemployment and price hike.

He said the workers’ problems including upgradation and increase in salary should be solved and quota for their children in employment should be restored.

He demanded that the allowance of Hydel power station employees should be increased and be made applicable to the employees of other power stations as well. All the politically-motivated transfers of employees should be stopped, he said.

In Nawabshah, Hesco workers held a rally and a demonstration outside the press club. Local labour leaders Fazal Shaikh and Malik Nizamuddin said in their addresses to the rally that the employees worked round the clock and risked their very lives to provide electricity to nation.

They said that the high-ups had so far not accepted their charter of demands, which included upgradation of scales, special allowance and children’s quota in employment.

They demanded that the government and Wapda high-ups should accept their genuine charter of demands.

In Khairpur, Hesco employees held a rally, which started its march from the Powerhouse and terminated at the press club after marching on different roads.

Labour leaders Wali Mohammad Leghari, Tariq Mehboob and Ameer Ahmed Abro said that Hesco employees were working in very difficult circumstances and their salary was not commensurate with price hike.

They complained of political interference in transfers and postings of Hesco employees and called for making the process transparent. They demanded that they be paid Eid bonus as they were paid by the previous government last year.

In Jacobabd, Hesco workers held a rally, which emerged from Wapda office and terminated outside the press club after passing through different roads.

In Sukkur, scores of Hesco employees held a rally and a demonstration in front of the press club, demanding Eid Bonus and end to political influence in transfers and postings of Hesco employees.

The protestors led by Syed Zahid Hussain Shah and Badar-ul-Islam Malik started their march from Mohammad Bin Qasim Park and gathered outside the press club after marching on main streets. They demanded that the government should control prices of daily-use items and pay Eid bonus.
