Published September 20, 2008

KOHAT, Sept 19: A rocket hit a road near the court of the district and sessions judge on Thursday night. No loss of life or damage to property was reported. The rocket fired from an unknown location landed in the cantonment area between the MP checkpost and the court premises.

Meanwhile, more people have been leaving Darra Adamkhel for safer places after security forces and militants did not spare residential areas where many innocent people have been killed in mortar shell and artillery firing.

People living on the Kohat side of the Darra Adamkhel mountains are also worried because sometimes bombs fell in residential areas.

They complained that they were spending sleepless nights due to heavy artillery firing from the city towards hideouts of militants.

KOHAT TUNNEL: The people of southern parts of the NWFP and tribal areas have been facing hardships due to the closure of the Kohat Tunnel and the Indus Highway for 21 days.

Worst traffic jams have become a routine at the Khushal Garh Bridge, the alternative route the people have been using to visit the provincial capital and northern parts of the province. The bridge, which connects Kohat with the Attock district and Rawalpindi, has difficult entrances on both sides and drivers of long vehicles avoid it.

Businessmen have been badly affected by the closure of the Kohat-Peshawar section of the Indus Highway as their stocks are declining and prices of essential commodities are going up due to long journey on alternative routes. The Kohat-Nizampur road, which connects Kohat with the Nowshera district, is not used by heavy traffic. The journey between Kohat and Peshawar via Bara, Khyber Agency, or Kohat-Rawalpindi road takes five to six extra hours due to checking by the Taliban in the tribal territory. Vehicles are also checked at the Khushal Garh Bridge.
