KARACHI, Sept 24: The University of Karachi has completed the computerisation of results compilation. It has also introduced the system of “master checking” of results while the system of “codification” by senior professors for examination in medical faculties is already in place.

The university is set to introduce the codification system for BCom examinations this year.

For assessment of answer scripts, a system of centralised assessment will be introduced in the next graduation examinations so that the results compilation process could be made faster.

In order to prevent misuse of marks sheets, the scanned coloured photograph will be printed on the mark sheet of all final year students. The attendance sheets at examination halls will also carry photographs of candidates to check impersonation cases.

Admit cards with scanned photographs of candidates will be introduced soon to check tampering cases while enrolment/registration cards with scanned photographs are to be issued soon.

It has been observed that the cases of “unauthorised” change of examination centres were causing a delay in completing the process of results compilation. To curb the illegal practice of giving candidates a centre of their choice, the competent authority has decided to cancel the results of such candidates. Similarly, unauthorized change of subjects is also being checked and the penalty for the offence has been raised to Rs1,000.

Since long, candidates had been allowed to appear in the examination irrespective of their registration/enrolment year. The KU has now restricted the validity of results to five years after registration/enrolment so that the tabulation process could be accelerated. However, the candidates bearing old registration/enrolment have been provided a final chance to appear in the examination only this year.

The examination department had been facing a lot of problems due to the submission of incomplete examination forms by candidates. To sort out the issue, a committee had been constituted to scrutinize such forms. In the light of the recommendations of the committee, some measures have been taken to improve the situation.

A scrutiny committee comprising deans of two faculties and principal of on college affiliated with the university has been constituted and given the task of looking into the discrepancies being detected in the scrutiny of answer scripts.

As a result of the computerisation of the process, the results of eight MA subjects have been declared within a short period of two-and-a-half months as against the last year’s assessment period of five to six months.

In order to declare results in shortest possible time, cooperation of teachers was also sought and wherever the number of faculty members appeared sufficient, the number of answer scripts to be assessed by a member was restricted to a maximum of 500.—PPI
