SIALKOT, Sept 28: Crops on more than 4,500 acres have been affected in Sialkot district owing to the closure of MR Link Canal two weeks ago.

Sialkot Agriculture Department officials said paddy crop on more than 4,500 acres had been affected.

They said the water level had also dropped in Upper Chenab Canal and it was likely to be closed in a couple of days.

Paddy farmers expressed concern over the situation and demanded compensation.

The water level has been dropped in the River Chenab at Head Marala to 8,500 cusecs from 39,000 cusecs in the past few weeks due to water closure by India.

Cut in water level in the River Chenab has halted the erosion in Bajwat's villages. Earlier, the river erosion has affected dozens of villages and the affected people have yet to take compensation from the government.
