KARACHI, Oct 5: Jockey Mohammad Essa galloped home five winners, including a hat-trick, in a card of 11 where five outsiders dodged the punters by reigning supreme in the post Eid-ul-Fitr festivity at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Essa, a former champion jockey, was the pick of the day as he demonstrated his acumen leaving his contemporaries behind.

He came into prominence piloting King Of Kinjher, Marista and Sayeen Jee home in the first three races to complete the hat-trick. All the three had settled for second place in their last run.

Together with Essa, trainer Sher Mohammad also rose to the occasion with a hat-trick.

Following Sayeen Jee’s triumph, he presented owner Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara with The Sprint Championship steering the long shot to one-and-a-quarter lengths’ victory over favourite Fair Diamond in the sixth race. Making his appearance after a layoff, colt Fair Diamond failed to catch up Abhi Abhi as rider Nasir was not cent percent fit.

Essa completed his feat when he stormed favourite three-year-old bay filly Dilruba to an exciting two-and-a-half lengths’ victory in the last race. The filly was not backed by connections in the last outing.

The win also enabled Pir Pagara to complete a treble (Sayeen Jee, Abhi Abhi and Dilruba).

Debutant two-year-old chestnut colt Kartoos pulled off the first upset when he landed The Eid Millan Cup in his maiden appearance by getting the better of another debutant Shooter by one-and-a-half lengths. The connection backed Kartoos over 3 Knot 3.

Another outsider filly Claim To Fame claimed The Admiral’s Stakes registering a facile three lengths’ victory over filly Moomal. Favourite filly The Victorious ran below form and finished off the board.

As predicted, four-year-old bay colt Ace Of Base completed a hat-trick posting an impressive six lengths’ victory over Taizper.

Similarly, mare Royal Loyalty made it three on the trot beating Mushki by nine lengths. Favourite Haram Tob failed to find a place on the board. Royal Loyalty has shown marked improvement recently.

Fillies Crown Prince and Guess Its Me won the remaining two races.

Rider Tariq Baran also rode home a brace of winners — Kartoos and Ace Of Base.

The next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Oct 12.
