Aslam Khattak passes away at 100

PESHAWAR, Oct 10: Former NWFP governor and veteran leader Mohammad Aslam Khan Khattak died from protected illness at the Pims hospital in Islamabad on Friday.

He was 100.

According to official sources, his namaz-i-janaza would be held here at the Ladies Club in University Town at 3pm.

Mr Khattak was suffering from a heart disease.

Born on April 5, 1908 in Karak, Mr Khattak served with Dr Khan Sahib in the NWFP provincial government during his career as a civil servant and after partition he was posted to Afghanistan as ambassador.

In the 1970 election, he was elected as an independent member to the NWFP assembly from Karak. He became speaker of the NWFP assembly in 1972.

He also served as governor of the NWFP briefly after the ouster of the NAP-JUI governor.As a diplomat, he also served as ambassador to Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.

He was elected MNA and served as deputy prime minister to Prime Minister Mohammed Khan Junejo in 1985.

In 1988, he joined the Pakistan Muslim League but was defeated in the 1988 election.

He was re-elected in 1990 election and served as federal minister in Nawaz Sharif’s first government.—APP
