Faisal to lead Pakistan in HK Sixes

KARACHI, Oct 18: Middle-order batsman Faisal Iqbal will lead former champions Pakistan’s challenge in next month’s Super Sixes, the national selectors announced on Saturday.

The new selection committee, headed by former Test paceman Saleem Jaffer, also named Mohammad Salman, Waqas Ahmed, Raheel Majeed, Anwar Ali, Mohammad Talha and Kamran Younis in the seven-member squad.

Faisal, nephew of former Test captain and coach Javed Miandad, last played a One-day International in 2006 against the West Indies at Multan.

Faisal 26, has played 18 One-day Internationals since making his debut against Sri Lanka at Lahore in 2000. He has scored 314 runs at an average of 22.42.

Pakistan will be among eight teams in the sixes tournament to be staged at the Kowloon Cricket Club in Hong Kong on Nov 8 and 9.

Pakistan are placed in ‘Bradman Group along with India, England and South Africa while Australia, hosts Hong Kong, defending champions Sri Lanka and an All Stars team are in ‘Sobers Group’. The All-Star team includes Justin Langer (Australia), Stephen Fleming (New Zealand), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies) and Matthew Hoggard (England).

The teams are comprised of six players with one player as substitute.

Pakistan won the inaugural event 16 years ago.

The matches comprise two innings of five eight-ball overs.
