LAHORE, Oct 19: Fancied colt Dubai Fan outpaced his rivals to land the Islamabad Cup over the sprinting distance of 1,200 metres in a run away success during the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.The colt from Dubai Edition out-of-Fanim, an English mare was given a brilliant ride by jockey Shahid Rehman.

The colt’s scintillating display of speed was completed in one minute 14 1/5 seconds. The winner had six lengths to spare over the half-money favourite, the filly Princess Ginza.

Owned by Syed Parvaiz Hussain, Dubai Fan, a three-to-two second favourite was trained by the champion trainer Sohail Aziz. This was the fourth race in racing order.

In the supporting and sixth race, the fancied colt Desert Prince Lived up to his star billing defying the top weight of 10 stones and four pounds to win the Phularwan Plate, a class IV handicap race run over the 1,200 metres distance.

The 80-to-100 favourite colt owned by Mirza Khurshid Baig/Zaheer Aslam and ridden by jockey Aamir Parvaiz put up a monstrous performance to leave his five rivals staggering far behind and ending up with a nine lengths’ triumph over the chestnut horse Sher-e-Gujrat.

The filly Lucky Cat finished third with the bay horse Charismatic coming fourth.

Desert Prince clocked one minute 13 1/5 seconds. This was Desert Prince’s second triumph in a row.Yet another high class performance came from the filly Dixie, owned by Malik Hamid Ali Noon and trained by Haji Fazal Hadi, in the fifth race.

Dixie came from far behind to take the lead in the dying moments to beat Punjabi by three-fourth of a length. It was a breathtaking finish.

The colt Punjabi took a flying start and led all the way till there were only 50 metres to go when Dixie leaped ahead to win the race by less than a length’s margin.

But the most impressive winner of the afternoon was three-year-old filly Soviet Song, who won the third race in a come from behind style. She beat bay filly Iconic by five lengths with the filly Philogyny nosed out to third position.

Jockey Shahid Rehman rode three winners in a fantastic show of horsemanship. He partnered Soviet Song, Dubai Fan and Dixie in the third, fourth and fifth race, respectively.

A large holiday crowd witnessed the wonderful performances by horses like Desert Prince, Dixie and Soviet Song to their delight.

All favourite and second favourites swept the six event card decided in the afternoon.
