Qadirpur workers plan protest

Published November 8, 2008

SUKKUR, Nov 7: The federal government has given its approval to privatise Qadirpur gas field while workers union is all set to embark upon a long-term strategy of protesting the move.

Workers fear the decision will badly taint the image of Pakistan People’s Party, and more-so in Sindh as the party came into power after receiving cent per cent votes from here in February 18, elections.

The Union’s Joint Secretary Zahid Bhutto told Dawn by telephone that this was a conspiracy of the privastisation minister and said that workers would not allow the sale of gas field.

He said that Sindh’s claim over Qadirpur gas field was valid as all political parties unanimously supported field workers and even joined a protest rally at the site field last month, while blocking the National Highway for several hours.

He said the OGDC workers would start observing hunger strike from November 10 at important districts of Sindh and in front of press clubs and would also cordon the residence of federal minister of privatisation Naveed Qamar on November 16 in Hyderabad.

He said that the union would also seek legal remedy by filing a petition in the Sindh High Court. He said that the present government claiming of complying with the will of people was in fact going against them.

He urged President and Prime Minister to set aside the privatisation of Qadirpur gas field in the interest of people of Sindh.
