PESHAWAR, Nov 10: Punjab is leading the third Inter-provincial Games by grabbing 56 gold, 20 silver and nine bronze medals.

They are followed by the NWFP with nine gold, 25 silver and 22 bronze medals and Sindh with one gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze medals.

Balochistan so far got 24 medals (five silver and 19 bronze).

In the men’s athletics, Punjab took 13 gold, 10 silver and two bronze medals, followed by the NWFP with one gold, three silver and six bronze medals and Sindh with two silver and one bronze medals.

Punjab won seven gold medals and secured 105 points in the weightlifting event being played at the Committee Hall on Monday.

NWFP won one gold, three silver and two bronze medals and secured 61 points, Balochistan took four silver and two bronze and got 54 points.

The NWFP defeated Punjab 3-2 in the final of the women’s badminton event at the Qayyum Sports Complex.

Sidra of Punjab beat Sana of the NWFP 21-0, 21-0.

In the doubles, Punjab’s Sidra and Khazar stunned NWFP’s Sumble and Seema 21-5, 21-6.

The doubles pair of NWFP comprising Gul Rukh and Faiza turned the whole complexion of the match by defeating Punjab’s Anam and Naheed 21-12, 21-12.

In the singles, Faiza while using her excellent services and cross-court smashes upset Punjab’s top seed Anam Iqbal in a thrilling three-set match. The scores were 16-21, 21-17, 21-10.

Gul Rukh showed dominance against Iqra by compelling her to leave the singles after losing the first set.

Punjab beat NWFP 3-0 in the men’s event.

Azam beat Mohammad Masood 21-12, 21-12.

In the doubles, Ijaz and Atif beat Nadeem and Nawaz 21-12, 21-14 and in the last doubles Rizwan and Kashif beat Masood and Tahir 21-14, 21-10.

In other matches, Sindh beat Balochistan 3-0.

Ali Mehdi beat Hasnain baig 21-12, 21-11, Ali Mehdi and Asad outclassed Mehmood and Moin in the doubles 21-13, 21-9 while Hashim and Hassan defeated Hasnan Zain 12-21, 21-16, 21-17.

In the women’s volleyball event at the Frontier College for Women, NWFP upset Sindh to set up clash against Punjab in the final.

The NWFP took the first set 25-10 by giving no time to Sindh to settle down and the smashes of Asma, Lubna and Noor turned the whole complexion of the game.

The NWFP started the second set, scoring 10 points as against Sindh’s four.

The winners continued their hard work and won the set 25-9.

After winning the first two sets, the NWFP did not look behind and won the third set 25-14.

Earlier, in the opening match, the NWFP defeated Balochistan 25-12, 25-10, 29-9.

In the second match, Punjab outclassed Balochistan 25-2, 25-9, 25-8.

Punjab also secured victory against Sindh with scores of 25-11, 25-6, 25-13.

In the boxing event played at the Qayyum Sports Complex, Sindh got an edge over other teams from Punjab, Balochistan and host NWFP.

Sindh’s eight players took berth in the finals by stamping their superiority against fellow pugilists in thrilling battles, followed by NWFP whose six players moved to the final while Balochistan and Punjab’s four players reached the finals.

In the wrestling event played at the Community Hall, Punjab led the table by scoring 90 points with five gold, one silver and one bronze medals.

They were followed by the NWFP which scored 80 points with two gold, five silver, Sindh got one silver, five bronze and scored 35 points while Balochistan got six bronze by scoring 30 points.

The NWFP beat Sindh 2-0 in the opening match of the football event at the University Campus ground.

Kurshid Khan scored on the field attempt in the 28th minute while Anwar scored the second goal through a foul kick conversion from the 25-yard distance.

In the second match, Punjab and Balochistan played a goal-less draw as the ball was mostly confined to the midfield.

The NWFP took a flying start after defeating Balochistan 4-1 in the opening match of the hockey event at the Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

Waqar (16th min), Saad (25th min), Shujah (45th) and Ali (66th min) scored for the winners.

For Balochistan, right winger Javed reduced the margin on the field attempt in the dying moments of the match.

In the second match, Punjab and Sindh played a 2-2 draw.

Yasir opened the account for Sindh on the field attempt but it was soon tied by Punjab’s Abdullah Babar.

For Sindh, Ghufran got the lead but it was quickly levelled by Sohail Akhtar on a penalty corner.
