HYDERABAD, Nov 11: The council of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association on Tuesday slammed what it called anti-education and anti-teachers attitude of the officials of education department and demanded that the government immediately solve the problems of college teachers.

The council which met here under the association’s president Mohammad Yaqoob Chandio demanded regularisation of services of ad hoc lecturers and payment of salaries, promotion of teachers to grade-18, 19 and 20 on 1,000 vacant posts, upgradation of college teachers on the pattern of university teachers, issuance of posting orders to commission pass lecturers and abolition of the post of director general of colleges.

The meeting opposed privatisation of educational institutions and demanded posting of principals in the colleges on permanent basis.

The meeting criticised misbehaviour of the officials of Jamshoro district accounts office with women teachers of the Government Girls College Kotri and demanded removal of the accounts officer.

The council further demanded removal of the college principal and decided to hold elections of Hyderabad region on Dec 6, Karachi region and towns on Dec 16, and annual convention of the association on Jan 20, 2009.

CONVOCATION: The University of Sindh is organising Convocation-2007 on Dec 4 at the Allama I.I. Kazi campus in Jamshoro and the authorities has fixed Nov 20 as last date for submission of applications for registration as well as convocation fee.

A high-level meeting convened on Tuesday reviewed arrangements for the convocation and formed different committees to oversee the event.

The controller of examinations informed the meeting that the candidates who had graduated in 2006 and 2007 would receive their degrees and medals.

The vice-chancellor who presided over the meeting directed issuance of inner cards to candidates and invitation cards to their parents as well as guests.

The meeting was attended among others by pro-vice chancellor Dr. Rafia Ahmed Shaikh, dean of Faculty of Social Sciences Dr. Iqbal Ahmed Panhwar, Registrar Mohammad Saleh Rajar and Controller of Examination Dr. Parvez Pathan.

CONFERENCE: The Faculty of Education of the University of Sindh is holding a two-day National Education Conference on “School Education in Pakistan: Issues and Vision” with special reference to Sindh on Nov 27 at the Elsa Kazi Campus, Hyderabad.

The dean of faculty Dr Parveen Munshi said on Tuesday that the conference was aimed at highlighting educational issues at school level and finding out their solutions.

Scholars from different universities as well as senior educationists from different parts of the country would read their papers at the conference, she said.

The conference will discuss topics such as standard of primary and secondary education, girls education in rural areas of the country, current trends in school education and poverty and education.
