SHANGHAI, Nov 12: Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko insists tennis is untainted by gambling and that his corruption probe by tour officials was a “big mistake.”
Davydenko, who was cleared by the ATP in September, said the sport had no problem with illegal betting.
“What happened last year I think was a big mistake,” Davydenko said during the Tennis Masters Cup here. “This wasn’t happening on the tour, because it never happened again afterwards or before.”
The 27-year-old was under suspicion after he forfeited a match in Poland last year which attracted huge bets.
The controversy sparked a widespread clampdown with a host of minor players suspended and fined for betting on matches.—AFP
