International Seniors tennis begins

KARACHI, Nov 24: The Pakistan International Seniors world ranking tennis championship got off to a colourful start at the Karachi Club courts on Monday.

The arrival of sole Indian K. V. N. Murthy on Sunday night from Mumbai has added glamour to the event. He has been seeded third in 35-plus singles.

Murthy who has got a bye in the first round is drawn to meet local player Moin Memon who too has also got a bye.

Veteran Davis Cupper Rashid Malik catches the eye in the 45-plus singles. He has also reached here from Lahore and seeded second.

The 55-plus singles event has a draw of 16 unlike the other two categories which have a draw of 32.

Results:

45-plus singles (first round): Afaq Zafar bt Shariq Vohra 6-0, 6-4.

Second round: Tahir Gul bt Kamran Mirza 6-4, 6-3.

35-plus singles (second round): Ejaz Sarhadi bt Charlier Francois (Belgium) 6-2, 6-3; Mubarik Shah (NWFP) bt Sohail Qadir (Balochistan) 6-0, 6-4.

Tuesday’s fixtures:

Matches start at 5.00pm.
