LAHORE, Nov 25: An owner of a local paper succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Tuesday three days after two unidentified people, wearing police uniform, ambushed him near Miani Sahib Graveyard in Mozang.

SM Shahid, who was chief editor of London News, was going by his car after appearing before a sessions court in connection with a case when two car riders stopped him near Miani Sahib Graveyard, introduced themselves as cops of the Burki police station and asked him to accompany them.

When Shahid refused to do so, they fired two bullets and left him with an arm and leg injuries. He was taken to Services Hospital where he grew stable after operation.

Civil Lines division SP (investigation) Dr Hyder Ashraf told Dawn that Mr Shahid had been facing litigation in six cases registered against him under Section 506 of the PPC and Telegraphic Act by different people. He was charged with blackmailing people either in person or through phone calls, the SP said.

Ashraf said it was established after thorough investigation that none of the Burki police official had gone to the place for any purpose.

He said Mr Shahid in his initial statement had assured the police of making sketches of the suspects but his condition deteriorated and later he died.

He said investigation was under way.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the police investigators had started interrogating some people, including a doctor, who were being recently blackmailed by Shahid.
