Published November 26, 2008

KHAR, Nov 25: At least six militants were killed and four others injured when helicopter gunships and tanks pounded militants’ hideouts in Nawagai and Mamond tehsils of Bajaur Agency on Tuesday.

Ten mortar shells fired by militants on a security post in Kerrala missed the target. Several militants were killed when security forces returned fire.

According to sources, troops were consolidating their position in Nawagai after taking control of some strategic locations.

They said troops were likely to reach the main bazaar in the Nawagai tehsil headquarters in a couple of days.

Meanwhile, elders of the Arang tribe declared a war on militants and offered help to the government in establishing its writ.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the elders with the political administration in Khar.

The tribal leaders handed over four wanted people to the political administration.
