Amritsar trade fair postponed

KARACHI, Dec 1: A five-day exhibition of Pakistani goods with provision of on-spot sales from December 3 to December 7 at Indian border city Amritsar has been postponed because of the situation that has emerged after Mumbai attacks.

“The exhibition has simply been put off not cancelled,” a business leader who was set to leave for Amritsar on Wednesday informed Dawn on Monday. He said the postponement decision was taken by Indian authorities and conveyed to Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

Pakistani exhibitors were to put on display and offer for on-spot sales all the merchandise which was exhibited at the International Trade Fair in New Delhi from November 14 to 27.

“Pakistan was declared a partner country and was given the biggest space to set up 150 stalls,” Amjad Rafi, a participant in Delhi Fair who was also to display his goods in Amritsar, said.

Amjad said that Pakistani spices with brand names, boutiques, dry dates and many other consumer items are very popular in India.

S.M. Muneer, the recently elected President of Pakistan-India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in his press conference last week has complained that Indian custom authorities delayed the clearance of Pakistani goods for two days. He attributed that delay to bureaucratic red tapism.

Businessmen say that cross border trade between Pakistan and India remained unaffected after Mumbai terrorist attacks. “Trucks loaded with Indian goods are entering Wagah as usual in last few days”.
