Senator McCain in Islamabad

Published December 6, 2008

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: Senator John McCain, a senior member of the United States Senate committee on armed services, arrived here on Friday under a plan to exert pressure on Pakistan to extend greater cooperation to India in investigating the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Senator McCain, who is accompanied by Senators Joseph Lieberman and Lindsey Graham, both members of the powerful senate committee, is likely to call for transparency in the probe.

This is the third high-profile mission from Washington, following visits by Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, over the past two days.

The delegation would meet Prime Minister Gilani and senior officers of the armed forces.

Sources say that Senator McCain, who contested against president-elect Obama, is in favour of greater cooperation between Islamabad and New Delhi in the fight against terrorism. He visited India before coming to Pakistan.
