PESHAWAR, Dec 16: The contact group constituted to expedite work on establishment of ‘carpet nagar’ in the vicinity of Peshawar has informed a meeting held here that three sites have been identified for the project.

The meeting was held at the Governor’s House on Tuesday under NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani, which reviewed progress on the project.

Besides provincial secretary for finance Ziaur Rehman, secretary to governor Arbab Mohammad Arif, Smeda chief Javed Iqbal Khattak and representatives of the Small Industries Development Board, the meeting was also attended by carpet manufacturers and representatives of the UNHCR.

The meeting was told that three sites had been identified for the project in the vicinity of Peshawar and the process to purchase land would be started soon after a final decision was taken in this respect.

The officials said the provincial government had allocated Rs25 million for the project in the current budget.

The project, they added, envisaged constructing manufacturing-cum-housing units at the site and the government had planned to develop 500 to 600 family units.

However, the meeting was told, washing and finishing units would be established separately at the facility.

The meeting after reviewing the progress so far made on the project constituted a steering committee comprising representatives of government departments and organisations concerned to help materialise the project at the earliest.
