RAWALPINDI, Dec 26: Hundreds of PPP workers and supporters held a torch rally at Liaquat Bagh on Friday in memory of their leader Benazir Bhutto who was assassinated there a year ago.

It was a poignant occasion as it brought the painful memories of December 27, 2007 rushing back to the participants, and onlookers too.

A little girl brought the crowd to tears when she recited a poem she had written for the occasion, lamenting "Oh Benazir, You left us when you were needed most".

Senior PPP leader Qazi Sultan led the rally which was organised by Mian Khurram Rasool and Nazims of Union Councils of Rawal Town, including Sohail Pasha, Nasir Mir, Jamil Qureshi and Imran Hayat.

Hundreds of torch-bearing party supporters, including women and children, formed the rally which started from the Rawalpindi Press Club and terminated at the spot where Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun and suicide attack.

People not associated with any political party also took part in mourning Benazir Bhutto, the leader who had earned Pakistan the distinction of electing the first woman prime minister in the Islamic world.

Flowers were placed at the stage where Benazir Bhutto had stood and addressed the election rally in Liaquat Bagh on the fateful day last year.
