KARACHI, Jan 9: A contractor of the Pak Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC) at Port Qasim retrenched 300 workers on Friday. The incident caused slight unrest at the site.

Official spokesman of the PSMC Shafiq Ahmed Sheikh said the company had outsourced many of its works and services.

The workers had not been terminated as they were not regular employees but the workforce had been reduced owing to falling demand of cars that had slowed down the production. The contractors usually engage and retrench workers keeping in view the quantum of work, he explained.

He added that the workers had been demanding their dues from the contractor. Later, the issue was settled after the workers dues were cleared. He said that the workers had gathered both inside and outside the head office but they were not carrying any banners or placards, he added.
