Long march if no apology from Punjab

Published January 28, 2009

LAHORE, Jan 27: Union councils in majority districts in Punjab on Tuesday passed resolutions against the PML-N provincial government, threatening to take a direct action if it did not change its attitude towards them.

According to reports reaching here from districts like Sialkot, Lodhran, and Khanewal, the union councils had adopted the resolutions as per a decision by nearly 25 district nazims protesting against what they claim unjust attitude of the provincial government towards them.

In the resolutions, the union councils said as a first step towards the “direct action” district level conventions would be convened. Protest demonstrations would also be staged during the conventions at the district headquarters level.

And if the government failed to seek pardon from the nazims, they would stage a long march from Rahim Yar Khan and Attock to Lahore.

A spokesman for the protesting nazims told Dawn the conventions would be convened in the next 15 days. The nazims would also announce the date for the long march at a news conference in Lahore. “The people will forget the lawyers’ long march after seeing our rally,” he claimed.—Intikhab Hanif
