LAHORE, Jan 27: A competitive card of six events has been drawn up for the midweek Lahore Gymkhana races to be held at the Racecourse on Wednesday.

The first two races belonging to horses in class VI will be contested over 1,200 metres while the remaining four assigned to class VII will go over 1,100 metres.

All in all, 77 acceptors will be taking part in the events barring last-minute withdrawals. The opener, also the feature event, looks like an open race as none of the 10 contestants have any recent form or performance to merit the tag of favourite. The majority runners have not yet won a single race. A few among them, who have won a race or two long ago, have come down in handicap seeking demotions. Keeping in view the past and recent performances of the runners, four, namely, Westridge Boy, Brave & Beautiful, Gulf Line and Singhar look on chance.

The first two named are appearing on the track after two months’ absence, which leaves Bold & Beautiful and Singhar in the forefront to win the honours. On classification, Gulf Line stands out.

The Jhelum Plate, class VI, division II will go over the sprinting distance of 1,200 metres.

The supporting and second race, the over 1,200 metres Jhelum Plate, class VI division III and IV has a dozen runners. Of them three, namely, Luka Toni, Pawan Princess and Mirana Shaheen look on chance. They should fight it out in the same order too.

Ever Smiling, Chocolate Boy, Alpha Juliet and Mahima are the chance contenders in the third race, the Sohawa Plate class VII Division I, to be contested over 1,100 metres.

Five-year-old mare Ever Smiling, who registered a facile victory last Wednesday, will be on the trot to make it two-in-a-row.

The others will be chasing her to the finishing post.

Five-year-old bay mare Soneri Moaqa, who registered her maiden victory on Jan 21, will be going all out to make it two back-to-back wins in the fourth race. She may face a strong challenge from Abeer-e-Sehar, Come On and My One.

The fifth and sixth races comprising horses in the lowest divisions of class VII are mostly packed with runners showing inconsistent performance. Winner picking could be a difficult task for the punters as the result in these events is often unpredictable. Moreover, the fifth race, the Sohawa Plate class VII division III in the over 1,100 metres distance has the largest field of 17 runners. If any of the runners are slow in the start or their running is impeded, they will not be able to come back into the race. The last race, the lowest division of the class VII has 11 runners.

The first race will be held at 1.30pm.
