KARACHI, Jan 27: Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and Army registered win in the National Hockey Championship at the National Hockey Stadium on Tuesday.

The first encounter saw SSGC beating Navy 3-1. Shabbir Ahmad scored all the goals for the winners. They were awarded three penalty corners of which Shabbir converted one in the 24th minute. The other two were field goals in the 28th and 44th minutes. Navy’s consolation goal was scored through a penalty corner converted by M. Imran in the 60th minute.

In another match, NBP beat Punjab 6-2. Sibtain Raza (eighth min), Mohammad Atiq (14th min), Yasir Bashir (37th min), Akhtar Ali (52nd min) and Naeem Akbar (54th and 61st mins) were the scorers for NBP who got as many as five penalty corners but could only manage to convert one.

Punjab, meanwhile, wasted all their six penalty corners. Their two goals were scored by Rizwan Butt and Wajid Ali in the 49th and 60th minutes, respectively.

The third match saw Army beating Port Qasim 1-0. The decider was scored by Mohammad Imran when he converted a penalty corner in the 34th minute. Both sides were each awarded five penalty corners out of which Army managed to convert just one.

Meanwhile, the tray championship saw the playing of three matches.

NWFP beat Balochistan 4-2. Samad (eighth and 40th mins), Noman Pervez (42nd min), Naveed Iqbal (56th min) scored for NWFP. Balochistan’s two goals came through Jalal Ali (48th min) and M. Saleem (66th min).

Police beat Sindh 4-0. The scorers were Shahid Waseem (26th min), Farzand Ali (28th min), Niaz Ahmed (56th min), Tasawar Abbas (68th min).

Finally, KESC beat Capital Territories 8-1. KESC’s eight goals were scored by A. Qayyum Dogar (16th, 56th, 60th and 68th mins), Amir Iqbal (20th and 46th mins), Irfan Khan (32nd min) and Salman Hussain (51st min). Capital Territories consolation goal was scored by Barai in the 20th minute.

Two more matches being played in the final round on Wednesday. Port Qasim will face Railways at 1.00pm and HBL will face PIA at 3.00pm. Four matches will be played in the tray championship. Sindh will take on PTV, Pakistan Steel will face Police, Capital Territories will play against PAF and KESC will take on Balochistan.— Agencies
