KARACHI, Feb 4: Five people were killed on Wednesday in acts of violence in different parts of the city, police and witnesses said.
The trussed-up body of a 22-year-old man, stuffed in a gunny bag, was found at Hasan Lashkari Goth, a shantytown in Garden police area.
The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital where the victim was identified as Mohammed Akbar alias Akku, son of Imam Bux, a resident of Shah Baig Lane in Lyari.
The police said that the victim had gone to the house of his maternal grandmother in the mafia-infested neighbourhood on Tuesday evening and he had since been missing.
The witnesses said that tension and fear gripped parts of Lyari when the body was brought to the victim’s house. They said the shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and vehicular traffic disappeared from the streets as the locality reverberated with heavy gunfire.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim was shot four bullets, three in the upper torso and one in the head.
The police said that the victim’s locality was a stronghold of the Ghaffar Zikri gang, while his grandmother lived in the neighbourhood under the control of the rival Rehman Dakait group.
The police registered a case against unknown culprits on the complaint of the victim’s brother.
Factory worker shot dead
A 26-year-old man, father of an infant girl, was shot dead near his rented residence in Metroville.
The Site police said that unidentified culprits killed Mohammed Azam, son of Noor Mohammed, early in the morning when he was going to mosque for Fajr prayers. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Sources at the hospital’s medico-legal section told Dawn that the victim was shot a single bullet in the face from close range as the bullet went through his skull.
The police said that the victim, a factory worker, hailed from Bahawalpur and his family had gone to their hometown.
The police registered a case (FIR 147/2009) against an unknown number of unidentified culprits under Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of the victim’s landlord, Abdus Samad.
The area SHO, Inspector Bakht Jamal, said that the incident seemed to be motivated by a personal enmity.
Young man shot dead
A 20-year-old man was found shot dead near Nagin Chowrangi in the small hours of Wednesday.
The Taimuria police said that the victim was identified as Shah Wali, son of Zahir Shah, a resident of Mohammed Khan Junejo Colony, a shantytown behind the Al-Asif Square at Sohrab Goth.
Source at the medico-legal section of the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the body was shifted for a post-mortem examination, told Dawn that the victim was shot a bullet in the back from close range and it went through his upper torso.
The police said that the victim was jobless since he quitted his factory job two months ago. A case (FIR 93/09) was registered against unidentified culprits under Sections 302 and 34 of the PPC on the complaint of the victim’s father.
The police said that the victim was an Afghan national and his murder seemed to be the result of a personal enmity.
Teenager killed in crossfire
A 12-year-old boy was killed after he received a stray bullet in old Golimar.
The Pak Colony police said that the boy, Imran Abbasi, son of Latif Abbasi, a resident of Misri Shah Village, was killed in crossfire between two gangs.
Panic and tension gripped the locality as people took to the street following the killing of the boy. They burned old tyres on the streets and pelted vehicular traffic with stones. A heavy contingent of police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Killed by bandits
A 32-year-old man was shot dead late in the night by unknown bandits who wanted to rob the victim of his mobile phone in Lines Area.
The victim was shifted to the Civil Hospital where he was identified as Tanveer Siddiqui alias Jani.
