LANDI KOTAL, Feb 11: Security forces killed an activist of banned Lashkar-i-Islam (LI) and arrested two others at a checkpost in Khyber tribal region on Wednesday evening.

An official of the political administration told Dawn that paramilitary and Khasaddar forces manning Begiari checkpost on the Peshawar-Torkham highway signalled two cars to stop for checking.

He said that drivers of the cars ignored the signal and crossed the security barrier. The cars were coming from Jamrud to Landi Kotal.

LI activists were traveling in the cars, he added.Soldiers opened fire on the speedy cars, killing an activist of the banned group on the spot and injuring another.

The official said that another activist was also arrested while their three accomplices managed to escape.

Militants left behind two cars which were taken in custody. Security was beefed up in the area after the incident, he added.

Our Correspondent from Dera Ismail Khan adds: Unidentified armed persons snatched a tanker, carrying oil to Nato forces in Afghanistan, at gunpoint in Dera Ismail Khan on Wednesday.

The driver Mohammad Ishaq, a resident of Khyber Agency, told police that the armed men also snatched Rs5,000 and a cell phone set from him at gunpoint besides taking away the oil tanker near Lanada Adda.

He said that the tanker was carrying 22,000 litres of oil worth Rs1.3 million to Nato forces in Afghanistan. Prova police registered FIR against unidentified persons and started search for the container.

Meanwhile, unidentified persons shot dead Maulvi Shaber Shah near Qureshi More of Dera city on Wednesday.

The deceased, a member of Shai community, was on his way home from Dera city when unidentified persons killed him.
