US bans Tamil Foundation

COLOMBO, Feb 12: The US Department of the Treasury on Wednesday banned the Tamil Foundation (TF) for its links with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a statement from the US Treasury said.

The foundation has been targeted under Executive Order 13224. Under the order, any assets it has under US jurisdiction are frozen, and US persons are prohibited from engaging in any transactions with the foundation.

The Treasury noted that the foundation was closely linked to the banned Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO). “The head of the Tamil Foundation is also president of the Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation in the United States.

The TRO was named a Specially Designated Global Terrorist under Executive Order 13224 on Nov 15, 2007,” said Adam J.Szubin, Director of the Treasury’s Foreign Assets Control.
