LAHORE, Feb 12: Five candidates of two major political parties on Thursday filed their nominations for the upcoming Senate election.

From the Pakistan People’s Party, Jehangir Badr and Salahuddin Dogar filed their candidature for the general seats while Muhammad Kazim for technocrat seat. Raja Zafarul Haq and Najma Hamid of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz have filed papers for the general and women seats, respectively.

Provincial ministers Raja Riaz, Farooq Ghurki, Tanveerul Islam, Haji Ishaq and MPAs were among the supporters who accompanied the three PPP nominees to the Election Commission’s provincial office.

Jehangir Badr is the secretary-general of the PPP. He remained minister of science and petroleum during the Benazir Bhutto’s first government in 1988. Since Lahore became the citadel of the PML-N in 1990s, Badr could not win from his Walled City seat.

Salahuddin Dogar is a former MNA from Multan and Kazim Khan, an advocate, was earlier tipped to be made Punjab advocate general.

Raja Zafarul Haq is the chairman of the PML-N. The late Gen Ziaul Haq used to call him “the opening batsman of his team”. He was made ambassador to Egypt when he lost an MNA seat in the 1985 general election. Najma Hamid is an MPA and the president of the PML-N Punjab Women Wing.
