FAISALABAD, Feb 13: A Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) office-bearer, who was injured by gunmen a month ago, died at a hospital here on Friday.
In protest, people blocked Jhang Road for three hours, accusing the police of exonerating those who allegedly injured Sharafat Hussain, a PPP office-bearer from PP-63 constituency.
The protesters placed Hussain’s body on Jhang Road and blocked the road by burning tyres, throwing the traffic out of gear. The protesters said Rashid and Shahid, who were affiliated with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, allegedly opened fire at Hussain a month ago and injured him. They said though police registered a case against them, but acquitted them of all charges a few days later. The protesters dispersed peacefully after police officers assured them of action against the attackers.
Separately, people from Chak 102, Burj Mandi and Chak Jhumra staged a protest against the police and criminals outside the City Police Office and the press club.
They said criminals were extorting money from people in Jhumra police precincts without any fear of action by the law enforcers. —Staff Correspondent
