KARACHI, Feb 16: Sialkot opened a nine-point lead in Group ‘B’ of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship after storming to an innings and 20-run victory over Peshawar on Monday.

On the final day of what effectively became a three-day fixture after Friday’s opening day was washed out at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar, Sialkot bowlers, led by slow left-armer Nayyar Abbas and medium-pacer Naved Arif, claimed 14 Peshawar wickets to seal the victory.

Resuming their first innings at 120-6, Peshawar were dismissed for 179 with Nayyar taking 5-53. Following-on, the hosts were sent packing for 171 in the second innings despite fighting knocks by Mahfooz Sabri (89) and skipper Nauman Habib (50) as Naved captured 6-73.

Sialkot’s fifth win in eight matches took their tally to 51 points with Rawalpindi having 42 points in nine games.

Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) took three vital points after taking first innings lead over Habib Bank in the another rain-disrupted fixture at the KRL Stadium.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Lahore: Slow left-armer Zohaib Khan and paceman Junaid Nadir shared nine wickets between them to help Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) outclass Pakistan Customs by 10 wickets at the Sheikhupura Stadium.

Zohaib claimed five for 72 and Junaid 4-8 as Customs, who had conceded a big lead of 237 runs on the first innings, were all out for the same total in the second innings, leaving ZTBL needing just a single run for victory.

The match between Wapda and SSGC ended in a draw at the Lahore Country, Club Ground in Muridke with the former taking three points on first-innings lead.

Wapda’s star performer was all-rounder Rana Naved-u-Hasan, who followed his scintillating 110-run knock with five for 37 as SSGC were all out for 179 in reply to their opponents’ 460-9 declared.

Lahore Ravi also earned three points after their game against Multan ended in a tame draw at the LCCA Ground.

The rain-hit match between Faisalabad and Abbottabad at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha failed to produce any result.
