ISLAMABAD, Aug 30: Various facts about the partition and accession of Gilgit and other northern areas to Pakistan came to light when the wife of a late British Army officer handed over some historical documents to President Pervez Musharraf here on Friday. Maj Alemender Brown was posted at Gilgit at the time of the partition.

Margret Brown, widow of the officer, who now lives with her four children in Scotland, travelled to Islamabad and handed over to President Musharraf the important documents and a book written by her husband about the northern region of Pakistan.

Maj Brown was posted as the commandant of Gilgit Scout in 1947 and was instrumental in frustrating the design of the British viceroy of handing over Gilgit and other parts of northern region to the Maharaja of Kashmir, fulfilling the aspirations of the majority Muslim population who wanted to accede to Pakistan.

The documents contain the original letter of accession of Mir of Hunza to the Quaid-i-Azam and other correspondence expressing their allegiance to Pakistan.

The book also contains the memoirs of the officer’s stay in Northern Areas and his enormous contribution to the future success of Pakistan.

The president, while receiving the documents and the book, thanked Ms Brown and paid tribute to the services of her late husband and his deep association with Pakistan.—APP
